Silly Seaon Savings

November 27, 2010

Christmas will be here in less than a month! Its time for excitement but also headache. There are two sides to shoppers at this time of year. The side of buying gifts for everyone and buying for yourself (lets face it who doesn't love shopping for themselves).

The next two weeks I will be posting some great DIY present ideas. You'll be surprised how much you can save just by getting a little creative and staying mindful of your money.

For now here are some of my silly season savings tips:

* Would it be cheaper to DIY? — You see a beautiful necklace / ring / bracelet at the shop and want it bad but would you be better off doing it yourself?
* Look but don't touch — Research shows you're more likely to spend if you touch the merchandise. So browse, but keep your hands to yourself to avoid overspending.

* Outdoor Entertainment — Its summer so take advantage of being outdoors go to the beach with friends, walking around Darling Harbour, have a picnic or even visit the National Park.
* Eating out right— Dinner out doesn't have to be expensive if you know where to look for the deals. Restaurants and local take aways offer coupons. A great place to look is smartsaver.com.au

* Great night great savings — Its Friday / Saturday night and your first thought is what am I going to do tonight (or wear)? Have people over for a quiet BBQ, get friends to bring their own meat and you supply the salad its a great way to spend time with friends and save money at the same time!

DIY Gooey Chocolate Cake

Im not one for cooking its just one of those things that just doesnt appeal to me. For months I have been telling my boyfriend that I will make him a cake and yesterday was the day!

The thing I didn't realize was how cheap a cake could be to make that is if you have the eggs, milk and margarine (butter) already. We had all of those so for a total of $6.50 (cake mix = $3, cream = $1.50, strawberries $2) i picked up the rest of my ingrediants at my loacl supermarket.

I didnt want to make a plain cake I was going for something special and I was hoping that not only the cake was cooked perfectly but that the filling made mt taste buds dance.

I saw how to cut the cake in half prefectly on an episode of masterchef with Donna Hay.Simply you put the cake on a plate, stick a long knife in and slowly spin the plate around.

The icing came in the cake packet so that saved me on buying extra ingrediants. Instead of smoothing the icing over the cake i poured it on so that way it would drip down and taste oh so good!!
